What happens when a young woman who doesn't know the word for 'coffin' wakes up in a, err, "dead box" to find herself pursued by an aspiring murderer-filmmaker with a chromeskull mask? A bunch of other people lay their lives down for her, of course, sacrificing themselves to a series of crazy, bloody deaths so that she might live and pursue whatever vague dreams the airhead might have for the future. "Laid to Rest" came out in 2009 but it plays out like a post-ChatGPT nightmare of stupid writing and even stupider characters. Everybody here behaves like they're suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning or something. I mean, standards are generally low for practical intelligence when it comes to slasher movie protagonists but GODDAMN these characters are thick. For some, the creative kill sequences -- reminiscent as they are of the kind of stuff you'd see in '80s or '90s splatter fare -- make up for the rest of the film's glaring flaws and generally low production values. Not for me, however. This shit's bad (but I'll still probably check out that sequel).
