"Final Destination" in the post-"Saw" era turns out to be one of the high points of the series. This is a notable upgrade in visuals, violence and talent from the previous entry, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead leading the way as the high school graduate who saves a troop of her peers from a rollercoaster disaster and thus condemns them to more individualised deaths. The opening sequence is goofy but most everything else is more seriously executed, at least until director James Wong delivers the gory money shots we're all waiting for. The spin on the Death formula here is that the grim reaper, a la Jigsaw, gives the kids clues that will either help them survive or divert their attention in the wrong direction. This leads to some of the most satisfying death scenes in the series. "Final Destination 3" might even be the most fun entry of the franchise.
