A look back at the incredible directorial career of Stanley Kubrick, indisputably one of the greatest filmmakers in American history, "Kubrick by Kubrick" combines audio footage of the man himself with (archival) input from a range of individuals either involved in or enchanted by his movies. This makes it a compelling watch almost by default, although a runtime of just over an hour prevents it from doing its subject the justice he deserves. There's still lots to like about Gregory Monro's admiring doc, and I especially enjoyed Kubrick's thoughts on the silly premium that is often put on "originality." Kubrick could make the most unoriginal film in the history of the world and it would still be essential viewing. That's one measure of his greatness.
