Freaky (2020)

A hysterical blend of early-2000s teen comedy vibes and "Fear Street"-esque self-aware horror that's littered with classic callbacks and cracking one-liners, "Freaky" finds a serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn) swapping bodies with 17-year-old would-be victim Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) after attempting to off her with a mystical dagger. Quickly discovering that there's a 24-hour window of opportunity to return to her own body, Millie enlists the help of her friends to find and thwart the Butcher. Meanwhile, he takes advantage of his new feminine form to continue killing teens in various creative and gory ways en route to the inevitable third-act stand-off.

If the general trajectory of the plot is predictable enough for a horror-comedy take on "Freaky Friday", Christopher Landon's movie does a great job of delivering the gruesome goods and belly laughs that the movie needs in order to overcome what minor flaws it has. The characters are a joy to be with, the death scenes are at times glorious (such as the shattering of a frozen body and the eyeball-hooking of one particular jock) and the comedic situations the core characters are thrust into are pretty brilliant (that may be both the best and most excruciating kiss scene I've ever seen in a movie!). It's not amazing on the level of an "X" or a "Last Night in Soho" but for what it is, it's a complete success. Oh, and I'm hereby declaring this to be Vince Vaughn's best performance.
